The European steel industry is facing the big challenge of decarbonizing its production processes, in order to provide its contributions to climate changes mitigation while preserving its competitiveness on the global market and enforcing its technological leadership. In this context, the exploitation of Hydrogen-based technologies is of utmost importance and is targeted by substantial efforts in terms of research and innovation.

To discuss the most significant results obtained so far and the technological trends that will dominate the research scenario in this context, the European Steel TEchnology Platform  - ESTEP  organizes, in cooperation with the TeCIP Institute (Institute of Communication Information and Perception Technologies) of Sant’Anna School, organizes a web workshop entitled “H2GreenSteel - Hydrogen route for a green steelmaking process”. The event is articulated into four on-line sessions, which will take place on May 7, 21, 28 and June, 11 and will bring together representatives of the most important European companies and research institutions engaged in the steel sector.

In the TeCIP Institute (Institute of Communication Information and Perception Technologies) of Sant’Anna School, the research team led by Valentina Colla, which has been developing frontier research activities in the steel sector for many years, is actively committed within EU-funded projects to promote sustainable steel production, via hydrogen-based production technologies and hydrogen exploitation for valorizing by-products of the steel cycle.

Therefore, Dr. Valentina Colla and Dr. Ismael Matino were among the promoters of the Workshop, which opens on May 7, are involved in the Scientific and Organizing Committees, will chair 3 out of the four scheduled sessions and coordinate the preparation of the Workshop Proceedings. Moreover, they will participate as speakers, presenting the research activities developed within the TeCIP Institute on the topic and discussing the contribution of hydrogen-based technologies to both primary production processes and auxiliary processes for by-products valorization, to the overall aim of improving the socio-economic and environmental sustainability of the steel production processes.
